Unveils 600-Km Economic Corridor to Boost Connectivity Between Bengaluru and North Karnataka

The karnataka government has announced plans to construct a new 600-kilometer economic corridor to enhance connectivity between Bengaluru and the Kalyana karnataka region, which includes Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, and Vijayanagara. The Public Works Department (PWD) will oversee the project, with funding provided by the Kalyana karnataka Regional Development Board (KKRDB).

This proposed greenfield expressway aims to significantly improve travel efficiency, reducing the current 12-14 hour journey on National Highway 50. The new corridor will connect key industrial zones, district headquarters, and financial centers, offering a faster and safer route for both goods and passengers.

The PWD has issued a tender for a consultant to conduct a pre-feasibility study, which will evaluate the optimal route, number of lanes, land acquisition needs, and the overall benefits of the corridor. This will be PWD’s first venture into constructing a greenfield expressway. The study will assess existing alignments, traffic data, and future growth potential to ensure the project’s economic and technical viability.

The Kalyana karnataka region, a crucial area for congress President mallikarjun Kharge, has received ₹5,000 crore in the 2024-25 budget from the Siddaramaiah-led government to support developmental initiatives. The new corridor is expected to significantly enhance the region's socioeconomic status.

Additionally, the PWD plans to upgrade State Highway 104, which connects Bengaluru to Nandi Hills and Kempegowda international Airport. This 50-kilometer road will be improved under the State Highway Development Project. Recent complaints about its condition have led to immediate action, including a tender for a 2.6-kilometer section at a cost of ₹24.28 crore, with further improvements planned to enhance access to the airport and nearby areas.
