Our Vision: Indian-Made Chips in Every Device Globally

On Wednesday, prime minister Narendra Modi highlighted that now is the ideal moment for investment in india due to the government's stable policies and favorable business environment. Modi emphasized India's commitment to developing a robust semiconductor industry and announced that the country aims to become a major semiconductor hub. He inaugurated Semicon india 2024 in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, a three-day event running from september 11 to 13 under the theme ‘Shaping the Semiconductor Future.’

Modi expressed confidence that this is a prime time for opportunities in india, stating that the country is positioned to support and lead in the semiconductor sector. He noted that india is determined to transform into a semiconductor powerhouse and is targeting a $500 billion electronics sector by the decade's end, up from its current $150 billion.

The prime minister revealed plans to train 85,000 technicians, engineers, and R&D professionals to ensure the workforce is ready for the semiconductor industry. He also mentioned a commitment of over ₹1.5 lakh crore towards semiconductor manufacturing, with numerous projects underway. Modi's vision includes having Indian-made chips in every global device.

Modi highlighted India’s unique advantages, including a reformist government, a growing manufacturing base, and a tech-focused market. He also stressed the importance of supply chain resilience, particularly in light of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Union Electronics & IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Modi’s vision to democratize technology access through initiatives like the wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital india Mission and the Telecom Mission. He noted that India’s efforts to develop the semiconductor industry, a foundational sector crucial for various technologies, have gained momentum under Modi’s leadership after several attempts over the past 60 years.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath pointed out that the state now produces about 50% of India’s mobile phone components and has become a significant exporter of consumer electronics. He mentioned that samsung india has established a display manufacturing plant in Noida, further solidifying the state’s role as a data hub.

Ajit Manocha, president of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, emphasized the global significance of supporting the semiconductor industry’s growth, noting that it is essential for various sectors worldwide. Semicon india 2024 will feature over 250 exhibitors and 150 speakers, highlighting the industry's expanding role and potential.
