Mamata Banerjee Takes Action Amid Controversy Over RG Kar Hospital Case

West bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has taken steps to manage the fallout from her handling of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. She has instructed her ministers and MLAs to avoid making any further comments on the case or the protesting junior doctors.

This directive was issued during Tuesday's cabinet meeting as part of the government's effort to mitigate damage to its reputation. Recent remarks by party members, including Udayan Guha and Lovely Maitra, have fueled controversy and criticism.

Udayan Guha, the bengal minister and Dinhata mla, faced backlash for his insensitive comment about the ‘Night Freedom Rally’—a protest demanding justice for the assaulted doctor. Guha suggested that those who attend the rally should not seek help from him if they experience domestic abuse, a remark that further alienated the public.

Adding to the controversy, Ashokenagar local leader Atish Sarkar threatened protesters in a viral video. Sarkar warned of retaliatory measures against those criticizing chief minister Banerjee, including making offensive posters of their family members.

The situation worsened when mla Lovely Maitra labeled the protesting doctors as "butchers," accusing them of neglecting the poor and underprivileged who rely on government hospitals. Maitra’s comments were criticized for demeaning the medical professionals involved in the protests.

In response, TMC national general secretary abhishek banerjee took to social media to clarify that the party does not support any harm against doctors or intellectuals, emphasizing that the party stands by their cause.

In reaction to the threats, doctors organized a march to the health department carrying a model of a brain and previously had taken a model of a spine to the police commissioner, underscoring the need for active police intervention.

TMC insiders revealed to CNN-News18 that the party leadership is frustrated with the unwelcome comments from its members, which are undermining the party’s damage control efforts.
