Interim government, Led by Muhammad Yunus, to Reassess adani Power Agreement

New Delhi: The interim government of bangladesh, headed by Muhammad Yunus, will review the 2017 power purchase agreement with adani Power Ltd, according to a report by the indian Express. The interim administration is keen to examine the agreement's terms and determine if the electricity price is reasonable. “Indian businesses, including adani, will be scrutinized… The contracts signed and their terms will be reviewed to ensure foreign companies comply with local laws,” an unnamed official told the indian Express.

This development follows a letter from adani Group Chairman gautam adani, dated august 27, requesting Yunus's assistance in resolving the $800 million in unpaid dues owed by the bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) for electricity supplied by Adani.

In addition to adani Power, indian companies such as PTC india, NVVL Ltd, and Semcorp Energy india also provide power to Bangladesh. As of january 31, 2023, Bangladesh's own power generation stands at 22,700 MW, according to the bangladesh Power Development Board.

Bangladesh imports 1,160 MW of electricity from india and, under the 2017 agreement, is committed to purchasing 1,600 MW from adani Power Ltd for a duration of 25 years.

Adani Power jharkhand Limited (APJL), a wholly owned subsidiary of adani Power Limited, confirmed last year that it will supply 1,496 MW of net capacity power from its 2x800 MW Godda USCTPP to bangladesh under the november 2017 PPA with the BPDB, utilizing a dedicated 400 kV transmission system connected to the bangladesh grid.
