Lord Ganesha in Bengaluru police Van: PM Modi and bjp Leaders Express Outrage Over Incident

An image of Lord Ganesha’s idol inside a police van in Bengaluru has sparked significant controversy, drawing reactions from various political figures, including prime minister Narendra Modi.

The incident occurred during a protest at Bengaluru's Town Hall, which was organized by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Ganesh Utsav Committee in response to an attack on a Ganesh Visarjan procession in Nagamangala. The protest, which aimed to call for an NIA investigation into the incident, was held without police permission. Despite this, a whatsapp message led people to gather at the Town Hall, prompting police to deploy two platoons of officers to manage the situation.

As protesters assembled and began to chant slogans, police started detaining them and moving them to a waiting police van. Among the crowd were individuals carrying a Ganesha idol, about 1.55 feet tall. According to Bengaluru police commissioner B. Dayananda, the idol was briefly left unattended as arrests were made. In response, a police officer ensured the idol’s safety by placing it inside the van to prevent it from being damaged or stolen. The officer later arranged for the idol’s visarjan (immersion) to be conducted respectfully at a local police station.

The image of Lord Ganesha in the police van quickly went viral, leading to strong reactions from various leaders. prime minister Modi commented, “In Congress-ruled Karnataka, even Ganpati is being put in jail,” during an election rally in Haryana. Senior VHP leader Girish Bharadwaj condemned the incident as “heartbreaking,” arguing that it portrayed Lord Ganesha in a disrespectful manner and criticizing the police for their handling of the situation.

Photographs of the scene, showing the idol in the van, captured widespread attention and fueled the controversy. Bharadwaj and other critics argued that the handling of the Ganesha idol highlighted perceived biases in the enforcement of protest regulations and restrictions on Hindu festivals.

The incident underscores the tensions surrounding religious and political demonstrations, particularly in a climate of heightened scrutiny and sensitivity.
