What will change with One Nation One Election?
On wednesday (18 september 2024), the Union cabinet approved the proposal of the committee headed by former President ram nath kovind for the One Nation One Election. The committee led by the former President submitted its report in march 2024 regarding the One Nation One Election. Now politics has heated up in the country regarding this. congress called it a decision to divert attention from the issues.
1. In this report, it was said that the elections of lok sabha and State Assemblies should be held simultaneously in the first phase. It has further recommended that local body elections should also be held within 100 days of the completion of lok sabha and State assembly elections simultaneously. The committee's recommendation said, "There should be a single voter list for voters across the country. There should be a similar voter card for everyone."
2. The central government will get the One Nation One election Bill passed by parliament in the winter session, after which it will become a law. The committee headed by the former President had contacted 62 political parties of the country regarding One Nation One election, out of which it got the support of 32 parties. In this, 15 parties did not support One Nation One election, while 15 parties did not give any reply.
3. The committee also recommended the creation of a common voter list and voter ID card by the election commission of india in consultation with the state election authorities. Currently, the election commission of india is responsible for conducting lok sabha and assembly elections, while the local body elections for municipal corporations and panchayats are conducted by the State election Commission. The committee recommended 18 constitutional amendments, most of which will not require the approval of the state assemblies. However, this will require some Constitution Amendment Bills, which will need to be passed by the Parliament.
4. PM Modi has supported One Country One election on many occasions. The PM had said that elections should be held in the country only for three or four months. politics should not happen throughout the year. Holding simultaneous elections will save the country's resources." PM Modi also said from the ramparts of the red Fort, "The country will have to come forward for one nation, one election."
5. According to a report by news agency PTI, the Law Commission may recommend holding simultaneous elections for the three levels of government - lok sabha, state assemblies and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats from 2029 and a provision for forming a unity government in cases like a hung house.
