Kolkata Doctors to Resume Emergency Duties After 42 Days, 

Junior doctors in kolkata announced on thursday that they will resume emergency services on saturday after a 42-day protest, but will continue their demonstrations. They will not provide services in the outpatient departments (OPDs) of government hospitals as part of their ongoing dharna, which demands justice for a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical college and Hospital on august 9.

Members of the West bengal junior Doctors’ Front stated they would end their dharna outside Kolkata's Swashthya Bhavan and march to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office. “Since many of our demands have been addressed, we see this as an initial victory,” they remarked.

The trainee doctors’ federation warned that if the climate of fear does not improve within a week, they will escalate their protest. Having protested outside Swashthya Bhavan for nearly 10 days, they intend to question the cbi about the timeline for the investigation into the RG Kar case. “We will demand to know how long it will take to achieve justice,” they stated.

The doctors expressed their intention to wait a week for the West bengal government to fulfill its commitments, threatening to resume their “cease work” if promises are unmet.

Press Statement from Doctors
In a press release announcing the end of their dharna, the protesting doctors claimed “initial success” regarding their five demands for justice for Abhaya, which triggered the protests.

“Our movement has effectively halted attempts to cover up the incident and undermined the investigation. Due to our efforts, the government addressed most of our second and third demands during a meeting on the 16th, leading to the removal of key police and health officials,” the statement detailed. “However, we remain firm on our fourth and fifth demands,” they added, indicating they would discuss essential service protocols at each medical college and participate in emergency services starting the day after tomorrow, while continuing their strike on other issues.

Meeting with mamata Banerjee
Earlier this week, chief minister mamata banerjee met with the protesting junior doctors and agreed to remove certain officials in response to their demands, aiming to resolve the ongoing conflict related to the RG Kar incident.
