MMRDA to Build Ring Roads Around mumbai to Cut Travel Time to One Hour

The mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled an ambitious initiative to reduce traffic congestion in mumbai by creating a network of ring roads around the city.

This comprehensive project, estimated at Rs 58,000 crore, will involve constructing over 90 kilometers of new roads, bridges, and tunnels. Central to this plan are seven outer and inner ring roads, which are currently at various stages of development and tendering. The goal is to eliminate traffic bottlenecks in mumbai by 2029, as reported by The indian Express, which has reviewed MMRDA's detailed master plan.

Overview of the Ring Road Masterplan

Set to be completed within the next five years, the MMRDA will partner with several agencies, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and the National Highways Authority of india (NHAI) for this project.

The report emphasizes the importance of these ring roads in improving East-West connectivity, an often overlooked aspect of Mumbai’s infrastructure. Once completed, these roads are expected to boost economic activity in the region. Key components of the ring road project include the Versova-Bandra sea Link, the Versova-Dahisar Link Road, the Alibag-Virar Multi-Modal Corridor, and the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. Collectively, these routes will form a ring around the city, helping to alleviate traffic congestion.

The proposed ring road network will cover the entire mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), stretching from the vadodara border in gujarat to Alibaug in the southern Konkan region, and extending towards Navi mumbai and Thane. This initiative is part of a long-term vision called “Mumbai in Minutes,” aimed at reducing travel times across the city to under one hour. MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee told The indian Express, “When we say mumbai in minutes, it should not take more than 59 minutes to travel from one end of the city to the other.”

Mukherjee also noted that these projects are essential not only for easing traffic but also for transforming the transportation landscape of mumbai and Thane. “With MMRDA, MSRDC, and BMC collaborating, the future of transportation in mumbai and thane looks bright,” he added.
