Every year, India's oscar nominations garner a lot of interest, especially in the Best international Feature Film category. The Film Federation of india declared Laapataa Ladies to be the official submission for the 2025 Oscars. The movie, which was directed by kiran rao, was selected from a list of 29 submissions, which included a number of well-known tamil movies, like Thangalaan, Maharaja, Kottukkaali, Vaazhai, jigarthanda DoubleX, and Jama. Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi, was left out, which particularly infuriated kollywood fans, who expressed their displeasure on social media.

The final five films considered for the official entry included:

1. Laapataa Ladies (Hindi) [Winner]
2. Thangalaan (Tamil)
3. Vaazhai (Tamil)
4. Ullozhukku (Malayalam)
5. Srikant (Hindi)

On the other hand, others claimed that the selection process was biased in favor of hindi films. The claim that the procedure is ambiguous was brought up in a social media post that said, "The fact that LAAPATAA LADIES were selected is evidence of the selection body's ignorance of what works internationally." Laapataa Ladies has also been accused of being a replica, with some speculating that it was a 1999 television series Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol, starring Ananth Mahadevan.

The fact that kiran rao and her group neglected to credit the original work disappointed critics. Some, on the other hand, were happy that Laapataa Ladies—a film that was at least passably good—was selected rather than Animal, Kalki, Chhota Bheem, or chandu Champion. Laapataa Ladies is still representing india at the esteemed Oscars stage in spite of these scandals.
