Court Denies Bail to Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal in RG Kar Case,

A special court in kolkata has denied bail to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and suspended police officer Abhijit Mondal, who are both accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The court noted that the severity of the charges could categorize the case as one of the "rarest of rare," potentially leading to capital punishment.

The court stated, "Given the grave nature of the accusations, if proven, capital punishment may be a possibility, and it would be unjust to release the accused on bail." It emphasized that the social status of the accused—one being a doctor and the other a police officer—cannot be disregarded in these proceedings.

Additionally, the court dismissed the accused's request for in-camera proceedings regarding a narco-analysis test, stipulating that it could only occur with their consent.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the court that there are suspicions of altered or falsified records in the case, which are currently undergoing forensic examination. They indicated potential involvement of both Ghosh and Mondal, supported by additional evidence from CCTV footage at the police station.

Mondal was arrested on september 14, while Ghosh, who was already in custody for a separate corruption case, was taken into custody on september 15. The cbi had previously arrested the prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, on august 10, shortly after the victim's body was discovered. Allegations suggest there was an "unnecessary delay" in seizing evidence that could have implicated Roy, and the investigation is ongoing regarding a possible criminal conspiracy involving Roy, Ghosh, and Mondal. Both accused are now in judicial custody until september 30.
