According to Banaras Hindu University's World Almanac coordinator professor Vinay Kumar Pandey, the disagreement among astrologers about the date of diwali has been resolved. All the scholars of Khasi are certain that diwali will be celebrated on Thursday, october 31. diwali is celebrated all over the country on this day. According to Ujjain-based astrologer Pandit anand shankar Vyas, the exact date of diwali is october 31, Thursday.

Why the confusion?

According to dharma texts, the festival of diwali is celebrated on the new moon day of the month of Karthikai. This time, the new moon Thithi which falls in the month of Aippasi starts at 4.29 pm on Thursday, october 31, and lasts till 6.25 pm on Friday, november 1. Thus Amavasai Thithi lasts for 2 days and there is a difference of opinion among astrologers.

According to kasi Vidwans, it is very important to worship Goddess lakshmi during the Pradosha period i.e. evening and night during the diwali festival. Amavasai thithi on october 31 starts at 4.29 pm and lasts through the night. The next day i.e. november 1, Amavasai Thithi will end at 6.25 PM. As the auspicious time for diwali falls on october 31, it is Shastra's ritual to celebrate the festival on this day.
