As per report cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall near Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara on friday (October 25), according to the indian Meteorological Department (IMD), prompting the state to intensify preparations such as evacuations and resource mobilisation. Cyclone Dana coincides with the catastrophic 1999 Super Cyclone after 25 years, which hit odisha on october 29, 1999.

Perhaps Odisha’s dedication to improving disaster management has not only saved countless lives but has also established the state as a leader in disaster resilience. The transition from the harrowing experiences of the 1999 Super Cyclone to the ongoing preparations for Cyclone Dana demonstrates the importance of proactive governance, community engagement, and technological advancements in mitigating the effects of natural disasters.

Furthermore the state has established a robust disaster response framework that includes the odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), consisting of 20 specialized units equipped with cutting-edge disaster management equipment. The ODRAF has advanced tools for search and rescue operations, including road-clearing equipment, boats with inflatable tower lights, medical first responder kits, and hydraulic rescue kits. In addition to ODRAF, the odisha Fire service has evolved into a multi-hazard disaster response unit, enhancing its ability to handle emergencies outside of traditional firefighting. Despite heavy rainfall and wind, the effective communication and preparedness measures meant there were no casualties reported, showcasing the strength of the state’s response.
