On august 23, Mari Selvaraj's Vaazhai and PS Vinothraj's Kottukkaali were premiered in theaters. Both films received favorable reviews at the time of their theatrical debuts. Both films deviated from typical commercial entertainment, but Kottukkaali stood out due to its festival status and more focus on topic, which may not appeal to a wide audience.

Even during the actual theatrical release, a number of well-known filmmakers, including Amir, have stated in interviews that it is not a smart idea to distribute Kottukkaali-style films in theaters because the audience for these films is less. However, Vaazhai was a big hit and was well received by both reviewers and moviegoers who saw it in theaters.

In this case, Vaazhai was made available on over-the-top (OTT) platforms on october 11; nevertheless, based on social media evaluations, OTT viewers felt that the film was inadequate and overvalued. Additionally, viewers are giving Kottukkaali bad reviews following its OTT debut. On social media, viewers who had seen both films on over-the-top streaming services were criticizing them and saying that they were the worst scams of 2024. Audiences who viewed the films on OTT after they were released said that the two films were overrated, which is why reviewers have given them so much buzz.
