Currently pre-Diwali raids carried out across parts of Uttar Pradesh and madhya pradesh have revealed some shops in cities like noida, Greater noida, ghaziabad as well as in ujjain and Indore. Reports said officials of the food safety department carried out pre-Diwali raids where they seized samples of ghee and besan laddu from a sweet factory in noida and destroyed over 200 kg of insect-infested rasgullas, 45 kg of contaminated sweets in Greater Noida.
Meanwhile in madhya pradesh, the food safety department seized a total of 300 kg of adulterated mawa in the city of ujjain and also confiscated 225 kg of mawa from a well-known sweets shop in indore which was made from refined oil and powdered milk. Officials speaking to both newspapers said citizens should urge caution before buying sweets this Diwali. Sarvesh Mishra, assistant commissioner (Food) II, gautam Budh Nagar, said they made the findings during routine inspections.
Moreover district health officer Amarjeet Kaur, while speaking to the newspapers, urged consumers to exercise caution before buying sweets. She urged people to avoid colourful sweets and said consumers should check if the colours used by the sweet shops are made using FDA approved materials. She also highlighted that the use of harmful aluminium foil in sweets is a new worry for officials and consumers. “Take a piece of foil between your fingers and rub it. If it disappears, it is silver foil, and if it turns into a ball, it is aluminium foil,” Kaur was quoted
