Kanguva - Audience Sensed The Verdict Way Ahead

G GOWTHAM
The tamil industry's ambitious pan-India high-budget picture Kanguva, which the producer said would surpass Baahubali 2 in popularity and possibly potentially reach 2000 crores (rather than merely 1000 crores), debuted to very poor reviews. There is typically a lot of excitement around event films, particularly those produced by the telugu industry (such as Salaar, kalki 2898 AD, and Devara).

As seen by these telugu pan-India blockbusters, event films and large-scale productions garner instant attention and may become lucrative even with mediocre content. However, Kanguva failed to captivate the public despite having a celebrity like Suriya in a different outfit that looked excellent, without trolls, and with a distinct arrangement right from the beginning.

This contrasts sharply with the reaction to the pan-Indian flicks starring tollywood Tier 1 heroes. The U.S. distributor opened bookings well in advance, but Kanguva flopped even before the first event, with North American presales barely reaching $100K. In India, the opening was as subpar.

The results are in, and while the film's material isn't as awful as Shankar's indian 2, it has gotten a similar reception. The big concern now is how the audience didn't become thrilled in spite of the creators' and Suriya's extravagant boasts and data-size. They didn't even attempt to give the movie a respectable opening in their local tamil markets, so how could they know something was wrong with it?

The lack of hype surrounding the movie may have been caused in part by DSP's soundtrack. Nonetheless, the teaser and two trailers used the visual components. Nevertheless, many didn't care about the movie and didn't show up for the initial showing. Although Suriya's market downturn may have contributed, it appears that the public had anticipated the outcome of a large-scale movie like Kanguva. Despite all the hoopla, they did not swarm the theaters for the first day of the first showing like previous historical films produced on a large scale and span. Perhaps this is the reason they say Janta Janardhan hai!
