Bangladesh's Buddhist-Christians enraged by attacks on Hindus...
The recent attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh's eastern Sunamganj district have once again raised questions about the safety of minority communities in the country. The bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned these incidents and demanded the government take strict action against the criminals and take concrete steps for the rehabilitation of the victims.
According to a press release by the bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, more than 100 houses and businesses of the Hindu community were attacked during the violence that broke out in Mangalargaon and Monigaon on the night of december 3. Apart from looting and vandalism, a temple was also damaged. These attacks have caused economic losses of 1.5 million Bangladeshi Taka (more than Rs 10 lakh).
'The attackers should be arrested immediately'
20-year-old Hindu villager akash Das is said to be the reason behind the violence. According to the allegation, akash Das posted something on facebook which was considered objectionable. However, he was arrested before the violence began. The council strongly condemns such communal attacks and demands the immediate arrest of the attackers, the press said.
Growing tensions in Bangladesh
The incidents come amid growing tensions in bangladesh over the treatment of minority communities. The arrest of Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy krishna Das on charges of sedition has raised concerns. Mr Das, a spokesperson for bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jot, remains in custody despite calls from india for his release. Protests have been held outside the bangladesh Deputy High Commission in kolkata and other indian cities, drawing outrage from political and religious groups.
Yunus government's stance
Amid growing criticism, bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus has sought to address the concerns of minority communities. In a meeting with religious leaders from different faiths, Yunus stressed the need for accurate reporting and urged cooperation to bridge the gap between reality and media reports. Yunus said, "We want to create a process to get accurate information and hold the perpetrators accountable"
Muhammad Yunus has clearly stated that all citizens of bangladesh, regardless of their religion, are entitled to equal rights. Let us tell you that the Hindu community in bangladesh has reportedly faced more than 200 attacks in 50 districts since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government on august 5.
