Karthigai Deepam Mythological Roots - Rituals!!!

On december 13, 2024, tamil Nadu will celebrate Deepam, one of its most important and ancient celebrations. Celebrated during the tamil month of Karthigai, the festival falls on the full moon (Pournami) and the Karthigai Nakshatra (constellation), making it a time to burn lamps and give prayers.

Origins in Mythology

Ancient Hindu mythology is deeply ingrained in Karthigai Deepam's beginnings. Scripture claims that Lord vishnu and Lord Brahma once quarreled about who was better. In order to settle the dispute, Lord shiva challenged the two gods to determine the boundaries of an endless column of fire. Neither Lord Vishnu, who took the shape of a hog, nor Lord Brahma, who took the appearance of a swan, were able to locate the ends. The dispute was resolved when Lord shiva manifested himself and proved his sovereignty.

According to legend, shiva later manifested as a hill near Thiruvannamalai, the location of the present-day Arunachaleshwara Temple. To honor this auspicious occasion, a huge beacon is lit atop the hill as part of the temple's big Karthigai Deepam celebrations.

According to another tradition, Lord Muruga (Karthikeya) is connected to the celebration. It was on this day when Goddess Parvathy combined the six-faced deity, known in tamil culture as Aarumugan, into a single form.

Celebrations and Rituals

Karthigai Deepam in tamil houses starts with a full cleaning and decorating of the house, complete with colorful kolams (floral designs) and entryway festoons made of mango leaves. To represent the victory of light over darkness, traditional lamps like lakshmi Vilakku, Kuthu Vilakku, and Gajalakshmi Vilakku are lit in houses. After nightfall, devotees break their fast with sumptuous meals.
