The Union cabinet approved the bills to implement 'One Country, One Election' and the draft law is likely to be introduced in parliament in the current winter session. This decision was taken in the Union cabinet meeting chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi.
The government is keen to have extensive discussions on the bills which are likely to be sent to the parliamentary committee. Sources said that the government is also willing to consult the Speakers of various state assemblies through the committee.
Now Samajwadi party leader IP Singh has made a big claim regarding this. IP Singh wrote on social media site X - In an important event today, the Modi cabinet today approved the "One Nation One Election" bill. It will be legally implemented as soon as it is passed in Parliament. According to an estimate, Modi ji can conduct lok sabha elections along with UP elections in 2026-27. This can be possible only after census and delimitation. The problem is that the law for 33% reservation for women has been passed, but until all this is done, it seems impossible to hold simultaneous elections.
What is the government's plan?
The government, moving forward on the 'One Country, One Election' plan, accepted the recommendations of the high-level committee in september to hold simultaneous elections for the lok sabha, state assemblies and local bodies in a phased manner. Citing the recommendations of the high-level committee, sources had said that one of the proposed bills proposes to amend Article 82A by adding sub-clause (1) related to the due date. In this, an attempt will also be made to include sub-clause (2) in Article 82A related to the simultaneous end of the term of the lok sabha and state assemblies.
