A 40-kilometer tunnel route is planned for Bengaluru, which should help with the city's severe traffic congestion. According to the india Herald, the BBMP has already finished the tunnel's Detailed Project Report (DPR).

What the Tunnel Will Cover?
There will be two primary passageways in the 40-kilometer tunnel:

An 18-kilometer north-south tunnel that runs from the Silk Board intersection in the south to the Hebbal Flyover in the north.
a 22-kilometer east-west tunnel that connects mysore Road in the west with KR Puram in the east.
A single-tube tunnel will be more economical than a twin-tube tunnel, per the feasibility study.

BBMP intends to seek an open market loan of Rs 19,000 crore to finance this ambitious project. This follows the state government's consent to serve as a loan guarantee.

A portion of the tunnel will be constructed by BBMP using private funding. If approved, a portion of the loan will also be used to finance the construction of an additional subterranean road that will connect KR Puram and Nayandahalli.

Phases and Costs of the Project
The project will be carried out in two phases:

Phase 1: The north-south corridor, stretching from Hebbal to Silk Board, will cost Rs 16,500 crore, excluding land acquisition. BBMP will contribute Rs 6,500 crore, with private investors covering the rest.
Phase 2: The second phase involves a 28-km underground road from KR Puram to Nayandahalli, estimated to cost Rs 25,000 crore. Work on this phase is yet to begin.
