Their first meeting took place on the roof, where Gursharan Kaur appeared in a white salwar kurta. Seeing Gursharan, who was doing an MA in History, manmohan singh immediately said 'yes', and thus their relationship began.


After the first meeting, Gursharan Kaur sang Kirtan in a musical program, which was criticized by her guru. On this Manmohan Singh said, "No, she sang very well." His praise inspired Gursharan. After this, he invited Gursharan to his house for breakfast, where he served eggs and toast for breakfast. This was his way of impressing her which reflected his simple and strong personality.
