Light to moderate rainfall is affecting delhi, with a positive impact anticipated on air quality.
Visibility in delhi dropped to as low as 350 meters as fog covered the city during friday morning's light to moderate rain, while air quality remained classified as "very poor," and the minimum temperature stayed above the normal range for the fifth consecutive day.
The india Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for potential adverse weather conditions through the weekend. They forecast thundershowers to persist until Saturday, influenced by a new western disturbance affecting the area. The IMD has advised residents to avoid coming into contact with electric wires and poles.
An air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 372 (very poor) was reported at 9 am on friday, compared to Thursday's 24-hour average of 345 (very poor). Rain is expected to help improve the AQI to the "poor" category on friday, with a further enhancement anticipated for Saturday.
According to the IMD, the Safdarjung weather station, which serves as a representative for delhi, recorded 9.1 mm of rainfall from 11:30 pm thursday to 8:30 am. Palam station noted 11.3 mm of rain, Lodhi Road recorded 6.8 mm, Ridge had 1.8 mm, Ayanagar 4.9 mm, and Pusa received 5.5 mm.
IMD scientist Jena Mani explained that the active western disturbance combined with easterly winds is causing light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in northwest and central india, including the Delhi-National capital Region.
Visibility at Safdarjung reached 350 meters at 8 am and 800 meters at Palam. An IMD representative mentioned that low clouds and rain were factors behind the reduced visibility, although no flight diversions or cancellations have been noted.
Airport officials stated that the Runway Visual Range, the distance at which pilots can perceive surface markings or lights from the runway center, has met the necessary standards throughout friday morning.
The minimum temperature increased to 11°C, which is four degrees above normal due to cloudy skies, compared to the previous day's reading of 8.2°C. The maximum temperature is projected to decrease to 20°C.
