"Humans of bombay CEO Karishma Mehta Pledges to Go Leather-Free, "

Karishma Mehta, CEO and founder of Humans of bombay, began the new year with a meaningful initiative. With over 2.8 million instagram followers, Mehta shared her commitment to becoming "leather-free for life" starting in 2025. She has decided to stop using animal-based products and embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. This move is aimed at supporting animal welfare organizations globally.

On her instagram, Karishma posted an inspiring message revealing that she plans to sell all of her luxury leather items. In the photos, she is seen with luxury bags and shoes from renowned brands like Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Yves Saint Laurent (YSL). Alongside the pictures, she wrote about how, as a child, she had dreamed of owning these "dream bags" and "dream shoes." However, she recently realized that materialism rests on an inherently flawed foundation, leading her to stop buying luxury leather goods and sell her existing collection. The proceeds from the sale will go to animal welfare NGOs.

Mehta, who is a vegetarian, expressed her moral dilemma about participating in a market that thrives on the exploitation of animals for luxury goods. She shared her thoughts in her post, stating, “As a vegetarian, I won’t eat meat because it doesn’t sit right with me to consume a living being. How then can it sit well with me to partake in a market that prides itself on being 'luxury' by levying their premium-ness on the quality of animals being skinned? It doesn’t.”

Concluding her message, Karishma shared her hopes for a more compassionate future: “Dream still, think of conquering your biggest dream still—relentlessly, unequivocally. But do it with heart, do it with kindness. Here’s to a kinder 2025 & being leather-free for life :).”

Karishma Mehta started Humans of bombay in 2014, inspired by brandon Stanton's Humans of New York. Over time, the platform grew in popularity, attracting millions of followers across facebook and Instagram. By 2021, the page had reached an even broader audience. In 2022, she launched a YouTube web series titled How The Hell Did I Do It?, where she interviewed several high-profile figures, including prime minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Ratan Tata. Reflecting on her journey, Mehta shared a post on instagram showcasing memorable moments from these interviews, emphasizing the team's relentless work and the many stories still to be told.

In 2023, Mehta faced criticism after a failed attempt to sue another page, "People of India," for copyright infringement. She was trolled for alleged plagiarism but clarified that she had always credited her New York counterpart for the idea behind Humans of Bombay.
