Research indicates that women in their mid-twenties tend to favor partners who are around 2.7 years older. However, as women become older, this disparity gets less. By the time they reach their 60s and start dating again, many women choose partners who are younger or closer to their own age to avoid the caring responsibilities that come with older relationships.
According to DailyMail, experts from university College Dublin noted that "selecting a younger or same-aged partner after the age of 60 may allow women to postpone or avoid the caregiving burden and better maintain their emotional well-being."
On the other hand, the tendency is the opposite for males. This trend is best shown by DiCaprio, 50, who sees Vittoria Ceretti, a 26-year-old model. Men like younger spouses more as they get older. Men are more likely to date women at least ten years younger by the time they are 60, particularly if they are wealthy and not in committed partnerships.
"Men tend to initiate relationships with younger women, and the age difference tends to increase as they get older," the researchers said. They hypothesize that this tendency stems in part from evolutionary biology, where youth denotes fertility—a quality that males are naturally drawn to.
Data from 40,000 men and women over 50 who tracked their long-term love history and the age differences at the beginning of their relationships were studied for the study, which was published in Personal Relationships. Men aged 25 dated women 2.9 years younger on average. The discrepancy widened by around one year every five years as these guys grew older.
The results also showed that in order to elevate their standing, wealthy men frequently go for younger companions. The researchers observed that "having a younger partner may signify prestige for older men."
