When GATE 2025 applicants got letters from IIT Roorkee addressing them as "Dear IDLI CHUTNEY NO SAMBHAR," they were taken aback. students were both bewildered, insulted, and amused by the weird fad that was intended to be a serious communication.

Candidates expressed their shock when screenshots of the email went viral on sites like Reddit. Many South indian students, in particular, were irritated because they thought the phrase made fun of their cultural identity. For South Indians, "Idli Sambhar" is a popular insult. One person commented, "This is so insensitive," while others conjectured that the email system may have been compromised or altered.

IIT Roorkee, the organization behind GATE 2025, apologized after receiving a lot of criticism. They highlighted in their statement that a technological error was the cause of the issue and promised that all applicants had received the updated emails. Some didn't see the humor in the scenario, while others thought it was amusing. One student said on social media, "It's not just about a glitch—it's about the lack of sensitivity and oversight." "This was definitely someone's last day of work," another person said.

Communication openness has come under scrutiny as a result of the occurrence. Because such errors can be readily interpreted as stereotyping, it emphasizes how important it is to respect cultural variety, particularly in official communications. This incident has served as a humiliating reminder to double-check systems and procedures for a prominent university like IIT, which is renowned around the world for its quality. For many, this was more than simply a problem; it served as a warning to businesses to increase their vigilance and prevent such situations in the future.
