No helmet, no petrol from january 26..!? government order!

In an effort to reduce two-wheeler accidents, the Uttar Pradesh government has informed the people that no petrol will be available from january 26 if they do not wear a helmet. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a significant initiative to improve road safety across the state. It has come up with a rule that two-wheeler riders must wear a helmet to buy petrol from january 26. This new rule has been announced by Transport Commissioner PN Singh. He has instructed all petrol station operators to publicize it and make the public fully aware of its purpose. The primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce the number of road accidents in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh also highlighted the importance of installing clear signs saying "No Helmet, No Fuel" to create awareness among motorists. He stressed that petrol pump operators should be fully aware of the relevant sections of the Motor vehicles Act, 1988, and the Uttar Pradesh Motor vehicles Rules, 1998. With the coming into force of this rule, it has been made mandatory for all two-wheeler riders to wear helmets.
To reinforce this message, district administrations have been directed to put up large banners at petrol pumps in all districts to create awareness among the customers. district Collectors and Divisional Commissioners in all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh have been asked to follow suit. By implementing such a measure, the authorities expect a significant improvement in road safety standards across the state along with inculcating a culture of helmet use among the people.
Will it make a difference?

The government expects this proactive measure to significantly contribute to reducing injuries and deaths due to two-wheeler accidents. Failure to wear a helmet is one of the most common traffic violations in Uttar Pradesh. The figures for the previous year reveal the seriousness of the situation of not wearing a helmet. Statistics show that around 25,000 to 26,000 lives are lost in Uttar Pradesh every year. The noida traffic police have issued around 28 lakh challans. Out of which, Rs 17 lakh fines were imposed for not wearing helmets.

While the initiative was initially piloted in gautam Buddha nagar district in 2019, its implementation was uneven. The new order aims to strictly enforce the rule in all districts of the state. petrol pump operators have also been urged to actively encourage motorists to wear helmets. The transport department has made a heartfelt appeal to the public, encouraging them to consider helmets not just as a legal requirement but as an important safety tool that saves lives.
