PM Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel, Highlights Kashmir’s Transformation

Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 6.5 km long Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal, kashmir - SRINAGAR/JAMMU' target='_blank' title='jammu and kashmir-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>jammu and kashmir, which will ensure year-round accessibility to the Sonamarg tourist destination. During his speech, he also paid tribute to the seven people who lost their lives in a terror attack near the tunnel last october and emphasized Kashmir's rejuvenation as "Dharti Ka Swarg" (Heaven on Earth).

PM Modi expressed gratitude to the workers who overcame difficult conditions to complete the tunnel, remembering the seven laborers who tragically died during the process. He noted that despite challenges, the work was completed, contributing to the region’s progress.

He remarked, "Our kashmir is regaining its former glory. people now enjoy visiting places like Lal Chowk at all hours, and there’s a vibrant cultural atmosphere. Artists have transformed areas like the Polo view Market, creating new spaces for art and music," the prime minister said. He also mentioned the enthusiasm surrounding cultural events, such as a marathon involving Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief minister, Omar Abdullah.

PM Modi also acknowledged the recent influx of tourists to the region, with more than two crore visitors in 2024. He extended his well wishes for the celebrations of the maha Kumbh mela in Prayagraj, and festivals such as Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal.

The prime minister further discussed Kashmir's future, announcing plans for improved railway connectivity and the ongoing development of projects that will enhance infrastructure across the region. The Sonamarg tunnel, which began construction in 2015, is a key milestone in improving connectivity for the people of Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh.

The Z-Morh tunnel, a two-lane bi-directional structure, was completed at a cost of over Rs 2,700 crore and features an emergency escape passage. Positioned over 8,650 feet above sea level, it will provide all-weather access to the region, avoiding landslide-prone areas on the route from srinagar to Sonamarg and beyond to Leh.
