Chinese school Asks students To Sign "Suicide Disclaimer",

A Chinese secondary school has sparked widespread outrage after requiring students to sign a "suicide disclaimer," which absolved the institution of responsibility in the event that a student self-harms or takes their own life. Shuizhai Middle school, located in Wuhua County in Guangdong Province, made headlines when it asked students to sign a letter following a class discussion about cherishing life.

According to reports, on december 23, 2024, students were instructed to sign the controversial letter after attending a session in which "cherishing life" was discussed. The letter included a commitment to not self-harm or take one's life, followed by a clause stating that if a student were to harm themselves, the school and its staff would not be held accountable, nor would the student's family demand compensation.

The letter has been criticized as morally irresponsible, and the local education Department launched an investigation after a parent alerted the authorities. The investigation revealed that the letter contained "inappropriate contents," and the education Department has since ordered the school to retract the document and annul the commitment. The school has been instructed to explain the situation to students and their parents.

The incident has sparked a fierce public outcry, with many questioning the school's approach to mental health and student well-being. social media users condemned the school’s actions, with one commenting that the "promise letter" was a gross violation of moral boundaries. Another pointed out that schools should be focusing on preventing self-harm or suicide rather than using disclaimers to avoid responsibility.

In response, the education Department stated that it would work to improve psychological education and student well-being in the region. The incident has raised important questions about the mental health support available to students in schools and the need for institutions to adopt more compassionate and responsible approaches to addressing these issues.
