According to his pupil Sanjay Sarvajana, Swami Sivananda baba, a yoga practitioner and padma shri recipient, has been going to every Kumbh mela at Prayagraj, Nashik, Ujjain, and Haridwar for the last 100 years.

Baba's Aadhaar card, which shows his birthdate as august 8, 1896, is displayed on the banner outside his tent on Sangam Lower Road in Sector 16. Amid the current maha Kumbh, Swami Sivananda's students waited outside for his darshan as he spent the morning in his chamber doing yoga and meditation.

Phalgun Bhattacharya, a Bengaluru follower, broke down in tears as he talked about Baba's early years.

Baba was born into a family of beggars. In the hopes that he would at least get sustenance, his parents would present him to saints who were in the village. baba remarked, "They gave him to Saint Omkarananda Goswami when he was four years old."

When he was six years old, Swami Sivananda went back to see his family at the saint's request. Tragically, he lost both of his parents within a week after his sister died upon his homecoming.

According to Bhattacharya, "Baba used a single cremation pyre to complete their last rituals. Then the saint became his exclusive caregiver. baba had never seen bread, milk, or fruits until he was four years old, according to Bhattacharya.

"All these developments shaped his current lifestyle -- he eats half a meal, sleeps by 9 pm, wakes up at 3 am, and spends his mornings performing yoga and meditation. He does not take a nap during the day," he added.

A delhi follower named Hiraman Biswas spoke about Baba's deep spiritual powers. He recounted an instance in which baba provided kheer in an earthen dish to a starving devotee. baba instructed the devotee to take it despite his complaint that there wasn't enough. Despite not being able to complete the kheer, the devotee continued to eat.

When the devotee fell at Baba's feet, he cried out, "I failed to understand you, Baba." According to Biswas, he met baba for the first time in chandigarh in 2010. baba lived on the sixth level of a building, but because neither elevator worked, he had to go up and down the stairs every day. "I was amazed by his fitness," reported Biswas.

A devotee claims that Swami Sivananda received the padma shri without submitting an application. "He is identifying and honoring gems like baba," the devotee said in appreciation of prime minister Narendra Modi.

The respected seer has no cravings, doesn't take donations, and doesn't get sick. He stays away from milk and its derivatives and consumes boiling meals without salt or oil. baba is based in Varanasi's Kabir Nagar, Durgakund, and will go back home after his time at the maha Kumbh mela is over.
