The way that sexual assault was portrayed in Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja drew harsh condemnation from many, who blamed the film for its unneeded and unsettling representation. Nonetheless, others contend that Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan is the true problem. Many people thought that director TJ Gnanavel's treatment of the subject was excessively graphic, repeatedly depicting the attack, which was unjustified and motivated by pity.

Meanwhile, a rape scene in the malayalam movie Pani, which was helmed by actor Joju George on his directing debut, sparked criticism. Many wondered how the censor board could have approved it at all.

Abhinaya, who played the survivor in the movie, offered her thoughts on the topic despite receiving accolades for her performance. She was questioned about how the scenario was handled, which one critic had called "immature and objectifying."

However, Abhinaya supported the director's artistic decisions, asserting that, given his extensive industry knowledge, Joju George made all of the decisions as the director.

She stressed that she had no more thoughts on the subject and that, as an actor, she trusted the director's vision. The public is still reacting negatively to the graphic rape scenario, particularly since it was made available on OTT.

The fact that Joju George's Pani received so little criticism from reviewers like Maharaja throughout its theatrical run is remains remarkable.
