At least 66 people have died in a fire that started at a hotel in a well-known ski resort, according to a statement made by Turkey's interior minister on Tuesday. ali Yerlikaya said that at least 51 additional people were hurt in the early tuesday fire incident, which started at 3:27 am (local time) at a hotel in the Kartalkaya resort in Bolu province.

"We are in excruciating discomfort. After examining the scene, Yerlikaya informed reporters, "Unfortunately, the fire that started at this hotel has claimed 66 lives." At least one of the injured was in critical condition, said to health minister Kemal Memisoglu.

Images from the event showed several frightened vacationers trying to escape by jumping out of windows as the building's upper stories caught fire. Grey smoke was seen billowing over the charred building in the video taken after the incident.

The resort had a fire incident during the busiest time of year when people from Istanbul and Ankara flock to the Bolu mountains for skiing. The resort is a popular winter destination during school holidays from january to the first week of February.

The state-run Anadolu Agency cited governor Abdulaziz Aydin as stating that up to 234 people were staying at the hotel at the time of the event. After leaping from the building "in a panic," two of the victims perished, according to Aydin.

Flames were seen shooting out of the hotel's upper levels in another set of event footage, part of which was shown by Turkish tv networks. Some of the footage showed individuals trying to escape the flames by using knotted bed linens.
