87 developers have been fined ₹1.40 crore by the Navi mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) Town Planning Department for disregarding Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to reduce dust pollution. NMMC authorities discovered during onsite inspections that the developers were ignoring blasting disruptions during construction and redevelopment operations, as well as controls intended to reduce air and noise pollution.

"In compliance with the bombay High Court’s directives issued on december 11, 2023, the SOPs were drafted and published by NMMC to mitigate environmental harm from construction sites," stated a spokesperson. The standards, which were published on august 1, 2024, include actions including setting up CCTV cameras at building sites, putting up tin sheets 30 feet high to keep dust contained, and using dust fogging equipment.

Ten sites in Belapur, twenty-four in Nerul, eighteen in Sanpada, seven in Vashi, six in Koparkhairane, nine in Ghansoli, and thirteen in Airoli/Digha were fined for infractions. The penalty for developers was ₹50 per square meter of plot space.

72 developers have already paid the fines, according to an official, and the remaining violators have been given eight days to either pay the charges or follow the SOPs. Thus far, ₹1,40,04,039 has been gathered.

The Town Planning Department emphasized that it will follow the law strictly. "Repeated offenders will receive Stop Work Notices and the penalty amount will be increased if SOP violations persist," an official stated.
