One of India's highest civilian honors, the Padma Awards is given out every year on the eve of Republic Day. Padma Vibhushan (for extraordinary and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (for distinguished service of higher degree), and padma shri (for distinguished service) are the three categories in which the awards are bestowed.

The award aims to honor accomplishments in any activity or discipline where public service is a component.

The Padma Awards Committee, which is annually appointed by the Prime Minister, makes recommendations that lead to the awarding of the Padma Awards.

Libia Lobo Sardesai, a 100-year-old Goan independence fighter who was instrumental in the state's liberation struggle, was one of those honored on Saturday.

'Voz do Liberdabe (Voice of Freedom)' was an underground radio station she co-founded in a wooded location in 1955 to mobilize locals against Portuguese control.

One of the other recipients is Gokul Chandra Dey, a 57-year-old West bengali Dhak player who defied gender norms by coaching 150 women in the traditionally male-dominated sport.

In addition, Dey invented a Dhak type that was 1.5 kg lighter than the traditional instrument. He performed alongside Maestros like Pandit ravi shankar and Ustad zakir hussain and represented india on several foreign stages.

The padma shri was also given to Delhi-based gynecologist Dr. Neerja Bhatla, who focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cervical cancer.
