Who looks after all the arrangements for the parade?

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) makes all the arrangements for the parade. It looks after everything, talking to the states and other departments. Preparations for Republic Day begin months in advance. Selection of tableaux is also a part of this. Because tableaux also have a tadka of art and culture. Therefore, the Ministry of culture also helps in this. To see which tableaux are good and which are not, to promote culture, all these things are done by the Ministry of Culture.

How are tableaux selected?

There is a complete process for which tableaux will be shown in the parade. Every year, months before Republic Day, the Ministry of Defense gives a theme to all the states, union territories and departments. Then everyone has to send the design of their tableaux on that theme.

There is a complete committee of experts for the selection of tableaux. This committee has big experts from fields like art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, dance. These experts judge the tableau on the basis of its theme, concept, design and its appearance.

These experts look at all the proposals carefully and then decide which tableaux will be included in the parade. These experts are selected by the indira gandhi National Center for the Arts (IGNCA) and the indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The tableaux of 16 states and union territories have been selected for the 2024 parade after four rounds of meetings.

In the first round, there is just a basic checking. If there is a need to make some changes in the design, then the experts tell. When the design is finalized, a 3D model of that tableau has to be made and shown to the experts. Then the experts check it thoroughly and make the final selection. Only those whose tableaux are selected for the next round are informed.
