Many people consider the Civil services Examination (CSE) to be one of the most difficult tests in India. There are three parts to the test, which is administered by the Union Public service Commission (UPSC): preliminary, main, and interview.

A maximum of 400 marks will be awarded for the two objective (multiple-choice) examinations that make up the Civil services (Preliminary) Examination in the disciplines listed in Section II, sub-section (A).

This test is solely intended to be used as a screening tool; applicants who are deemed eligible for admission to the Civil services (Main) Examination will not have their scores from the Civil services (Preliminary) Examination taken into account for calculating their final merit ranking.
