Set during India's 1975 Emergency, kangana Ranaut's political drama Emergency has been viewed as a box office flop. The film did not make back its ₹60 crore production costs when it was released on january 17, 2025. In four days, the film made merely ₹11.35 crore, despite its ambitious premise. Its poor success has been mostly caused by a combination of unfavorable reviews, fierce competition from other releases, and low appeal among its target demographic.

Responses to the movie have been diverse. Some call it a tragic plunge into propaganda, while others see it as her bollywood comeback. According to rumors, the movie will soon be available on Netflix. Netflix is interested in the movie because of its cast and theme, even if there isn't a fixed date yet. Netflix has once again seized this title in an attempt to increase viewership.

Fans have shown interest in viewing an uncensored version of the movie on the over-the-top (OTT) platform on social media. For the movie to be shown in theaters, the censor board had to remove several sequences, but would Netflix risk releasing the uncensored version on OTT? Emergency is an example of a movie that people won't see in theaters unless it features a famous person or has an original idea. Fans are eager to see Kangana's Emergency without any filters, but it remains to be seen if the over-the-top platform is prepared to accept the significant risk.
