In a shocking move, US President donald trump proposed "cleaning up" the Gaza enclave, which has been reduced to ruins as a result of the fierce Israel-Hamas conflict, and relocating Palestinians from the enclave to other nearby nations. According to CNN, trump claimed to have discussed with the king of jordan the possibility of constructing homes and relocating over a million Palestinians from Gaza to nearby nations. trump claimed that in a phone chat on Saturday, he urged Jordan's Abdullah II, a significant US ally in the area, to accept more Palestinians.

CNN reported that trump remarked on board air Force One, "I told him that I'd love you to take on more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it's a mess, it's a real mess." The call with trump was published by Jordan's official news agency Petra, although it omitted any reference to the relocation of Palestinians. According to the UN, there are currently about 2.39 million officially recognized Palestinian refugees living in the country.

Trump stated that he would want to discuss the issue with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on sunday and that he would like both jordan and Egypt, which borders Gaza, to provide housing for people. trump reportedly stated, "You're talking about a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing," adding that the region has been plagued by violence for millennia.

"I don't know, something needs to happen," he added, "but it's a demolition site at the moment. I would prefer to work with some of the Arab countries and construct homes in a different area where I believe they may perhaps live in peace for a change, because practically everything is destroyed and people are dying there."

Notably, the UN estimates that Israeli bombings have destroyed or damaged around 92% of houses and about 60% of structures, including hospitals and schools. Approximately 90% of Gazans have been relocated, and many have had to relocate more than ten times.
