When a first-year student applied sindoor (vermillion) on his department head during what seemed to be a wedding ceremony, a university classroom in Nadia became an unexpected wedding location. On social media, the incident—which featured traditional wedding customs and the exchanging of garlands—went global.

A female professor who was the head of the Applied Psychology department at Maulana Abul Kalam azad university of technology in Haringhata, Nadia, was implicated in the event.

How the ‘wedding’ took place
Participating in what is now known as a "classroom wedding," the student is fresh to the university. In front of their peers, the student swapped garlands and applied sindoor on the lecturer, as seen on camera. The video swiftly went viral on social media.

The professor and student pronounced themselves husband and wife at the ceremony, according to a document purportedly signed by three witnesses, which further fueled the dispute.

The professor in question responded by stating that the incident was not a real wedding but rather a component of an academic endeavor. Although the specifics of the initiative are yet unknown, she stated that the ceremony was meant to be a learning exercise.

An investigation is under progress.

The institution acted quickly, putting the lecturer on leave and opening an inquiry notwithstanding her explanation. Authorities at the institution have started an official investigation into the event in the interim.
