During Thursday's approach to Reagan National airport outside Washington, a passenger plane operated by American airlines collided in midair with a US army helicopter and fell into the Potomac River. A search and rescue effort involving several organizations resulted in the recovery of eighteen corpses from the river.

The passenger plane was traveling from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, with 60 passengers and 4 staff members on board, according to American Airlines. PSA airlines operated the flight. Following the incident, officials said, all takeoffs and landings from the airport near Washington have been suspended. Only around five kilometers south of the white house and the Capitol, the event took place in some of the world's most strictly regulated and watched airspace.

One of the US Army's helicopters was implicated in the accident, according to a US army officer. Three troops were aboard the helicopter, according to another officer, although it was unclear what their situation was.

An observation camera at the adjacent Kennedy Centre captured footage of the planes seemingly colliding and transforming into a fireball.

According to US President Donald Trump, he has received information on the "horrible accident" that occurred at Reagan National Airport. Noting that he was "monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise," he congratulated first responders for their "incredible work" in a statement. He said, "May god bless their souls."

According to senator Ted Cruz, the event resulted in fatalities. "While we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities," he said on X.
