During the Senate Judiciary Committee's confirmation hearing on Thursday, US President Donald Trump's nominee to head the FBI, Kash patel, welcomed his parents with "Jai Shri Krishna" and thanked them for coming from india to be with him.

"I would want to greet my mother, Anjana, and father, who are seated here today. They traveled from india to arrive here. Here, too, is my sister. To be here with me today, she also traveled across seas. The fact that you are here means the world. He said, "Jai Shri Krishna."

Patel, President Trump's Indian-origin choice to lead the FBI, presented himself as the perfect person to restore public confidence in the law enforcement organization, which he claimed had lost its credibility.

"As Chairman Grassley noted, the level of trust loss is all too low at the moment. Forty percent of Americans trust the FBI. There are two tracks to get it, senator," he continued.

Citing data from 2023, patel emphasized that combating violent crime was his top priority.

"There were 17,000 killings, 100,000 drug overdoses, and 100,000 rapes in 2023 alone. If I'm right, the FBI's first concern will be to make sure that our neighborhoods are safe and secure and that our kids have parks to play in rather than needles to cross," he stated.

Additionally, he pledged to work more closely with congress and to answer any pertinent information requests.

"Unfortunately, the FBI has not responded to the hundreds of queries that members of congress have recently filed. If I am confirmed, that won't happen. patel promised that all pertinent information requests will receive prompt, thorough responses.

Democrats said that he is an unrepentant conspiracy theorist at the hearing and cited a list of 60 alleged "deep state" actors—all of whom were Trump's detractors—that he included in a 2022 book and claimed should be looked into or "otherwise reviled."

Patel has "neither the experience, the temperament nor the judgment to lead" the FBI, according to top Democrat senator Dick Durbin.

Patel has denied having a "enemies list," telling the committee that his only goal is to hold criminals accountable.

He abruptly disassociated himself from at least part of Trump's pardons of hundreds of violent offenders convicted of crimes related to the US Capitol uprising in 2021.

"I do not agree with the commutation of any sentence of any individual who committed violence against law enforcement," he stated.
