San Francisco-based varun Vummadi, co-founder and CEO of Giga ML, said that many indian engineers making ₹1 crore or more are hesitant to work extra hours, sparking a tempest about work ethic in India's tech sector. "I've noticed a pattern in hiring engineers for our indian office. Even with a base salary of ₹1 crore, many are unwilling to work hard. A significant number of engineers with 3-8 years of experience are reluctant to work six days a week," Vummadi wrote on X.

The IIT Kharagpur graduate, who oversees an applied AI lab devoted to automating customer service, voiced his displeasure with what he sees as a deterioration in the work ethic of mid-level engineers in India. A contentious discussion on hustling culture vs work-life balance was swiftly triggered by his article.

Users on X were divided by Vummadi's remarks, with many contending that it is unfair to ask workers to work six days a week, regardless of pay.

"Crack people cannot be purchased. One user replied, "They appreciate money, don't worship it!" Vummadi said, "You can't buy in SF." In india, however, you can. High earnings in india are a major motivator for the majority of cracking engineers.

Aman, another user, said that professionals in their mid-20s to early-30s typically like two-day weekends. It's a strange way to say that many people between the ages of 26 and 32 would rather take a weekend. It seems rather typical to me.

Some even went so far as to charge Vummadi of being the type of employer that puts financial gain ahead of the welfare of their staff. "People are finally realizing the importance of prioritizing health above all else," a user said.
