On Sunday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued an order for retaliatory tariffs in response to the United States' planned 25 percent penalties. In response to Trump's tariffs, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said that his country will impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of US products.

Canadian and Mexican reactions to US President Donald Trump's proposal to impose a "25% tariff on imports from mexico and canada (10% on Canadian Energy)." This implied that a 10% tax would be applied to any energy imported from canada, including electricity, natural gas, and oil.

"This was done through the international Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl," trump said in a post to Truth News. Trump levied tariffs on china as well. On tuesday, the tariffs would become operative. According to the Associated press, his decree has a mechanism to raise the tariffs if the nations retaliate against the US.

What did mexico say?
Sheinbaum, the president of mexico, promptly issued an order for retaliatory tariffs. Washington's claim that her administration has a partnership with drug trafficking organizations was dismissed by her as "slander."

Responding on X, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said, "We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory."

"If the united states government and its agencies wanted to address the serious fentanyl consumption in their country, they could fight the sale of drugs on the streets of their major cities, which they don't do, and the laundering of money that this illegal activity generates that has done so much harm to its population."

What did canada say?
In retaliation to US tariffs, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said on saturday that his country will levy 25% tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of US imports.

Tuesday's initial round of duties will target US goods valued at Can$30 billion, with further levies on Can$125 billion worth of goods to come in three weeks. "C$30 billion would take effect from tuesday and C$125 billion in 21 days," Trudeau stated during a press conference.

Canada's reaction, according to Trudeau, will be "far-reaching and include everyday items such as American beer, wine...fruits and fruit juices including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfumes, clothing and shoes." This is similar to the American tariffs.

"It will include major consumer products like household appliances, furniture, and sports equipment; and materials like lumber and plastics, along with much, much more," he stated.

Additionally, a number of non-tariff measures were announced, some of which had to do with energy, procurement, and essential minerals. Earlier in a post on X, Trudeau said, "We did not want this, but canada is prepared."
