Women have always been portrayed in bollywood as superficial characters who are only supporting actors at best. More films featuring a female lens and a focus on women have recently passed the threshold. In the past, a lot of female characters were sexualized since they were depicted via a male lens. Somehow, even ladies going through a crisis were managed to appear attractive! women who were open-minded and progressive were portrayed as being conceited or had powerful vices.

Richa Chadha brought attention to this superficial portrayal of progressive women on tv in a recent interview, reigniting the conversation. She discussed how progressive women were portrayed as being fond of drinking, smoking, and partying, especially in the 2010s and 2012s. Although some women did engage in all of above activities, bollywood developed a tendency to portray progressive women as exclusively engaging in these activities.

The characters' accomplishments and strengths were not emphasized in any manner because of the way they were written. As if a lady with an open mind could do nothing but smoke and drink. Richa also discussed how a lady experiencing an emotional breakdown on film might somehow find herself on the dance floor, looking stunning while her mascara dripped down her cheeks. These kinds of images were so prevalent in movies throughout that decade that they became stereotyped.

One might even argue that they found it so hard to accept the idea of a strong, progressive, contemporary woman that they had to taint their perceptions by linking it to drinking, smoking, and going out. The irony is that although a woman would be hated for the same acts, a male character who did all those things would be deemed successful. Although bollywood has made an effort to see female characters via a female lens throughout the years, Richa's remark has spurred discussion on how women are viewed in movies and how viewers view these characters.
