Washington: According to a US official who spoke to Reuters on Tuesday, more than 20,000 federal employees have indicated to the US government they are prepared to leave their positions under an incentive scheme that ends on Thursday.

As part of the trump administration's efforts to reduce the size of the US government, the white house this week gave 2 million civilian full-time federal employees the option to cease working this week and continue to receive pay and benefits through september 30. The offer is illegal, according to several Democrats.

On Sunday, the white house said that air traffic controllers and other public safety workers would not be included in the "deferred resignation program."

According to the source, the number of postponed resignations is increasing quickly, with the biggest surge anticipated 24 to 48 hours prior to Thursday's deadline.

According to a september 2024 study, 42% of federal employees were over 50, and 115,900 persons departed federal government service in the 12 months ending in october 2023.

In a note to agencies on Tuesday, the white house Office of Personnel Management defended the program's constitutionality.

According to the U.S. official, the "deferred resignation program" has been subjected to a thorough legal assessment and is entirely voluntary. It is an attempt to provide financial assistance to employees when government agencies make adjustments to their staff.

As part of his sweeping overhaul of the U.S. government, President donald trump has dismissed and marginalized hundreds of public officials in an effort to reduce the bureaucracy and replace it with more loyalists.

The trump administration's call last week for federal employees to leave their "lower productivity jobs" and look for private sector employment, as well as to take a vacation to a "dream destination," infuriated civil servants.

According to a message addressed to employees, the scheme would allow them to stay on the payroll until september 30 but would not need them to work in person. In the meanwhile, their tasks may be curtailed or terminated.
