Yesterday, the plane carrying 104 American indian immigrants touched down in Amritsar. The majority of them were victims of employment fraud. Harvinder Singh, a resident of Tahli village in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, was one of them. He had been duped by an agent who stole Rs 42 lakh by giving him a work permit.

"The representative abruptly informed us that the visa had not been granted. They sent us on planes to qatar and then brazil from Delhi. The agent promised to place us on a flight to America from peru in Brazil. They did not, however, give us tickets for that trip. Rather, we were driven to the border between colombia and panama in a cab. The agent there informed us that we would be shipped there. After two days of waiting, no ship showed up.

We had to follow a way through the mountains. In the middle of the Panamanian bush, one of our fellow travelers passed away. They then transported us on a tiny boat toward the border with Mexico. The sea voyage lasted four hours. The boat overturned during this period, and one of our passengers perished. Harvinder Singh described his harrowing experience: "We made it through on very little rice."

A similar experience was reported by Sukhpal Singh from Darapur village. "We crossed the ocean in a boat for fifteen hours. After that, we hiked 40–45 kilometers across mountain-ringed valleys. If someone was hurt en route, they had no choice except to be abandoned to perish. Along the way, we came across a lot of dead bodies. We were put in a dark cell when we attempted to enter the US border later. Not even the sun was visible to us. Like us, there were thousands of families and kids. I urge people not to try to travel overseas illegally," Sukhpal Singh stated.
