Shohely Akhter of bangladesh was found guilty of trying to rig matches during the 2023 t20 world cup, making her the first female cricket player to be banned by the ICC on corruption allegations on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old received a five-year suspension.

Shohely, an off-spin bowler who has played for bangladesh in two One-Day Internationals and thirteen Twenty20 Internationals acknowledged breaking five rules of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code while in South Africa.

The accusations concerned dishonest tactics used during the Women's t20 world cup matches. However, she did not play for bangladesh in that event. The last time Shohely played for bangladesh was in 2022.

Shohely agreed to a five-year suspension beginning on february 10, 2025, and acknowledged the allegations of violating Articles 2.1.1, 2.1.3, 2.1.4, 2.4.4, and 2.4.7 of the Code.

The focus of the ACU's inquiry was Shohely's facebook Messenger exchange with a cricket player, the ICC designated as 'Player A', on february 14, 2023.

According to the ACU's investigation, Shohely sought to convince her friend and colleague to agree to perform fixes in future bangladesh matches by contacting her via facebook Messenger before the Women's t20 world cup match between bangladesh and australia on february 14.

The inquiry found that Shohely informed the teammate that during the australia match, her "cousin" who "bets on his phone" asked her if she would be hit or out.

Additionally, Shohely promised the player that if she fixed the game, she would receive two million Bangladeshi Takas, which would come from her "cousin"'s earnings from his wagers.

According to the ICC inquiry, the cricket player reportedly assured her teammate that complete confidentiality would be upheld, including erasing her texts "so they no longer existed" and that her "cousin" might pay her extra if the 2 million Takas was insufficient.

However, in addition to turning down the offers, the player who was contacted promptly informed the ACU of the situation and provided all of the voice notes from Shohely, who had erased those files from her devices.
