Potassium-rich salt is advised because, as we all know, sodium-rich salt can raise blood pressure, which is a key cause of cardiac conditions including heart attacks.

Potassium-Enriched Salt: An international investigation found that potassium supplements in salt can dramatically lower the risk of stroke mortality and recurrence. The World health Organization's (WHO) recent advice to eat potassium-enriched salt to prevent high blood pressure and associated cardiac risks coincides with this study.

Strokes are fatal.

One of the leading causes of mortality and disability is stroke, and recurring episodes continue to be a serious worry. Low potassium intake and high salt consumption are thought to be the primary risk factors. According to researchers from China, Australia, and the United Kingdom, "The study shows that potassium salt substitutes significantly reduced the risk of stroke recurrence and death, and are a new and practical therapeutic option for stroke patients."

In what way was the study conducted?

15,249 Chinese volunteers who had previously reported having a stroke were enrolled in the randomized clinical study. Participants were given the option of using ordinary salt or a salt replacement, which was composed of 25% potassium chloride and 75% sodium chloride by mass.

The results,

revealed in JAMA Cardiology that, in comparison to the conventional salt group, the potassium alternative group saw a 14% decrease in recurrent stroke. There were 2,735 recurrent stroke incidents in all, 691 of which were deadly and 2,044 of which were not. Both the number of stroke-related fatalities and hemorrhagic strokes decreased by 21 and 30 percent, respectively. Hyperkalemia, or elevated potassium levels, did not significantly differ across the groups, according to the researchers.

"The results of this cluster trial show that salt alternatives were safe and reduced the risk of stroke recurrence and death, suggesting major health gains from scaling up this low-cost intervention among stroke patients," concluded the investigators.

WHO suggests K-salt

According to WHO's latest standards, normal table salt, which is high in sodium, should be replaced with potassium chloride or K-salt. K-salt can reduce blood pressure, which can lead to chronic renal disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Additionally, it lowers the incidence of stomach cancer and other issues linked to excessive salt consumption. The WHO estimates that inadequate nutrition causes 8 million deaths annually. 1.9 million of these fatalities are attributable to excessive salt consumption.
