The new FASTag balance validation regulations from the National Payments Corporation of india will take effect on february 17, 2025. If a FASTag is banned, the owner will have seventy minutes to resolve the issue before fines or payment rejections at toll plazas, according to NPCI.

Whitelisted (active) and blacklisted (inactive) are the two categories into which FASTag accounts fall.

Insufficient balance, unverified Know Your customer (KYC), and inconsistencies in vehicle registration, such as an incorrect chassis number, might result in the Fastags being banned.

Every Fastag user should be aware of the two modifications made by the NPCI to the validation of balance in a FASTag.

According to the NPCI circular, if the account in question is banned or designated with exceptions, such as low balance, awaiting KYC updates, or mismatched vehicle information for more than 60 minutes before arriving at the toll plaza, FASTag transactions would be denied. If a FASTag status is inactive ten minutes after scanning at a toll plaza, the transaction will be refused.

The system will reject the transaction with error code 176 if a FASTag does not match the requirements, and the car will be penalized by being charged twice the toll cost.

FASTag Blacklist: 70-Minute Grace Period and Penalties
The reader read time and the time the tag is added to the hotlist, low balance, or blacklist will be used to validate the provided transactions. According to the NPCI's announcement, transactions shown on tags that have not been active for more than 60 minutes before the reader read time and up to 10 minutes after the reader read time will be rejected with reason code 176.

In accordance with the NPCI directive issued on january 28, 2025, the banks that supply Fastag were required to modify their systems and procedures as needed. It requested that the banks guarantee a seamless transition, and acquirer banks are encouraged to inform system integrators and plaza operators of these adjustments.
