After coming up with a proposal to impose reciprocal tariffs on nations that impose tariffs on American imports, US President donald trump told reporters thursday that he will talk about tariffs with prime minister Narendra Modi and emphasized India's high import charges on American goods.
The comments were made as the white house prepared to welcome prime minister Modi to the united states for his first visit since Donald Trump's return to the White House.
"India has historically been at the very front of the pack. "India charges enormous tariffs, but there are a few smaller countries that are actually more," he remarked.
He went on to say, "India has more tariffs than nearly any other country," as reported by Reuters.
"India has historically had the highest tariffs of any nation; they charge more than any other. We are charging them whatever they charge us.
Trump cited Harley-Davidson's previous difficulties in india, saying the motorcycle manufacturer had to establish a facility there in order to get around high tariffs.
He recommended that American companies follow suit, especially those in industries like chips, semiconductors, cars, and medical equipment.
"I recall that Harley Davidson was unable to sell motorcycles in india due to the country's exorbitant taxes and tariffs. As a result, Harley appears to have constructed a plant there to evade the duties. And with us, people can accomplish that. They may construct a factory, a plant, or anything else here, and it will contain chips, semiconductors, autos, and medical equipment," he stated.
To support the American brand Harley-Davidson, india declared in its Union Budget 2025 that it will reduce import duties on high-capacity motorbikes. Motorcycles that are imported as completely built-up (CBU) units and have an engine capacity of up to 1,600 cc now have a 40% import tariff instead of 50%. The reductions are greater for bigger motorcycles with engines larger than 1600 cc.
Semi-knocked down (SKD) kits now only have a 20% import duty instead of the previous 25%. Completely knocked down (CKD) units will now pay 10% tax instead of the previous 15%.
The ruling is interpreted as a clear indication of success for President Donald Trump's new US government. One area of growing contention between the US and india is the taxes on Harley Davidson motorcycles.
