Army Statement on Policy Change
In a post on social media platform X, the U.S. army confirmed the new directive, stating, "The U.S. army will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members."
"Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for service members are paused," the Army's statement read.
Trump's Justification
The administration's justification for the policy shift is laid forth in the executive order, which was issued on january 27. According to President trump, the discipline and dedication required of military troops is incompatible with identifying as a gender other than the one assigned at birth.
According to the regulation, military preparedness may suffer if transgender people are present in the armed forces. "A soldier's commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one's personal life, is crucial to the strength of our armed forces," the directive adds.
A Return to Trump-Era Military Policies
This ruling reimposes limitations that were earlier loosened in 2016 during the presidency of Barack Obama. During his first term, trump had tried to reinstate the ban on transgender service personnel, but President Joe Biden eventually overturned the restriction.
Trump reaffirmed his position at a Republican gathering in Miami, Florida, saying, "We will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military to ensure that we have the most lethal fighting force in the world."
Political leaders and advocacy organizations have responded strongly to the announcement, with some claiming that the prohibition discriminates against eligible people who want to serve their nation. However, proponents assert that it is required to preserve military unity and effectiveness.
