Strict restrictions on the use of elephants in temple festivals..!?

Two elephants brought for the procession were frightened by the bursting of firecrackers during a festival in the Koyalandi area of kozhikode district of kerala the day before yesterday. In this, the wall of a building in the temple premises collapsed, killing three people, including two women. As people scattered, 20 people were injured in the stampede. Following this, a report was sought from the temple administrators who organized the festival on behalf of the district forest department.
Furthermore, Forest minister A.K. Saseendran has sought an explanation from the collector and the Northern Zone Chief Conservator of Forests regarding the incident. Regarding this, he said, “The incident in which three people died due to the elephant being frightened is being investigated seriously. If it is confirmed that the Forest Act and the Domesticated Elephant Maintenance Act have been violated, strict action will be taken. It has been decided to impose strict restrictions on the use of elephants in temple festivals from now on,” he said. The kerala High court had issued strict guidelines for using elephants in temple festivals, including minimum distances between elephants and the public.
